Electrical Broadband

In a research paper just relesed, engineers at Penn State University said they had found a way for power lines to transmit data to homes at rates far faster than high-speed Internet connections from cable and telephone companies. Engineers estimated that their system could deliver data at close to one gigabit per second over medium-voltage electrical lines. (Tip via Kevin Taglang)

What will it mean for the cable, satellite, wireless and telco industries if electrical power companies enter the ISP business? It might mean more local control, since these companies are more local than media and telcom behemoths. Isn't that right? //Randall
